Dashkasan District is an administrative region in western Azerbaijan situated across mountainous terrain with elevations reaching 1,700 meters (5,575 feet). The area contains one main city, several settlements, and numerous villages connected by developed roads.
The region was established as Dastafur District in 1930 and renamed Dashkasan in 1956 under Soviet rule. It gained independence as part of Azerbaijan in 1991.
Local crafts and mountain farming remain central to daily life, with communities maintaining practices tied to the land and its resources. These traditions shape how people in the district use and value their surroundings.
Plan visits during warmer months when mountain terrain is most accessible, as weather conditions and elevation changes require appropriate footwear and clothing. Roads connecting neighboring regions are well developed, making navigation straightforward.
The district is a major mining center with substantial deposits of iron ore, gold, copper, and cobalt beneath its mountains. These mineral resources have shaped the region's economy and character for decades.
