Port of Mongla, River port in Bagerhat District, Bangladesh
The Port of Mongla extends along the Pashur River, connecting the Bay of Bengal with Bangladesh through multiple jetties and warehouses for maritime operations. The facility has eleven jetties, eight warehouses, and twelve swinging moorings to serve vessels up to 225 meters long.
The port was established in 1950 as Chalna Port and transformed from a regional facility into Bangladesh's second-largest seaport. This development reflected growing maritime trade for the country.
The port functions as a gateway for vessels traveling to the Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to the world's largest mangrove forest. Visitors can observe daily maritime traffic connected to this ecologically important region.
The port receives vessels daily and operates around the clock, making it a lively place to observe maritime activity. The best time to visit is during business hours when activity is at its peak.
In July 2024, the port entered a new bilateral partnership with India through an operational agreement. This shift marks a turning point in how regional trade flows through this facility.
