Liberation War Museum, History museum in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh
The Liberation War Museum is a history museum in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the Agargaon area of Dhaka, documenting the events of the 1971 independence conflict. The building rises nine floors and contains four thematic galleries with war objects, photographs, and personal mementos.
The museum opened in March 1996 in a rented house in the Segunbagicha neighborhood, where it remained for over two decades. In April 2017, it moved to its current building in Agargaon, designed specifically for the growing collection.
Visitors walk through floors arranged by theme, moving from early resistance movements through wartime alliances to the formation of the nation. Each level uses objects and testimonies to show how ordinary people joined the fight for independence.
The museum opens from 10 AM to 6 PM during summer and from 10 AM to 5 PM in winter, but remains closed on Sundays. Local visitors pay 50 taka for entry, while different rates apply for foreign guests.
The collection holds more than 21000 items, including the coffin that carried the remains of Bir Shreshtho Hamidur Rahman. Visitors also see weapons and equipment actually used during the nine months of conflict.
