National Library of Bangladesh, National library in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The National Library of Bangladesh is the country's main public reference library, located in the Agargaon area of Dhaka. The building holds several reading rooms and research areas, with collections covering printed works in Bengali, English, and other languages.
The library was founded in 1973, shortly after independence, building on archival structures that had existed during the Pakistani period. It was established by law as the national legal deposit library, meaning a copy of every publication printed in the country must be held here.
The library draws students, writers, and teachers who come to read or research in both Bengali and English collections. Walking through the reading rooms, visitors notice how reading is treated as a serious, shared activity in this space.
The library is on Justice S.M. Murshed Sarani in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and can be reached by local transport from different parts of Dhaka. Some collections and research areas may require registration before use, so it is worth asking at the front desk on arrival.
The building was designed by Muzharul Islam, who is widely regarded as the founder of modern architecture in Bangladesh and shaped many of the new state's public buildings. His approach was to make public spaces feel open and welcoming rather than formal or distant.
