Kurigram District, District in Rangpur Division, Bangladesh
Kurigram District spans 2,245 square kilometers in northern Bangladesh, bordered by India and crossed by five major rivers including Brahmaputra and Jamuna.
The region transformed from a British-administered mahakuma into an official district in 1984, previously forming part of the ancient territories of Gaurabardhan and Kamrup.
The district maintains agricultural traditions with over 70 percent of inhabitants working in farming, while local music includes Bhawaiya songs and Palli geeti performances.
Nine administrative subdivisions called upazilas contain 72 unions and 1,872 villages, with Kurigram city functioning as the central administrative headquarters.
The name Kurigram originates from the Munda language words 'kuri' meaning twenty and 'gram' meaning village, reflecting the historical linguistic diversity of this area.
