Maheshkhali Upazila, Administrative region in Cox's Bazar District, Bangladesh
Maheshkhali Upazila is an administrative region in Cox's Bazar that consists mainly of three islands surrounded by the Bay of Bengal. The territory covers around 362 square kilometers and is bordered by neighboring administrative districts.
The area was upgraded from a Thana to an Upazila in 1983, representing a major administrative reform in Bangladesh's local governance. This change raised the administrative status and management capacity of the region.
Multiple religious communities live here, and their temples, mosques, and monasteries are scattered across the towns and villages. You can see how faith shapes the daily life and the buildings you encounter while walking through the settlements.
The region is connected by a network of paved, semi-paved, and water routes spanning around 300 kilometers of roads and 70 kilometers of waterways. The island structure means that water transport and ferries are important alongside land routes.
The area is home to Bangladesh's only deep-water port, making it a strategic hub for shipping operations. This port facility is also central to several major energy projects with liquefied gas terminals being developed here.
