Gulshan Society Mosque, Contemporary mosque in Banani Model Town, Bangladesh
Gulshan Society Mosque is a seven-story contemporary building made of white cast concrete with a geometric screen pattern covering its entire exterior. The structure accommodates up to 4500 worshippers during Friday prayers and features elevators and stairs providing access to all six upper levels.
The building was completed in 2017 and designed by architect Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury, who introduced a fresh approach to modern Islamic architecture in Bangladesh. This project marked a turning point in how contemporary religious spaces are designed and constructed in the country.
The exterior screen displays Kufic script spelling out La-ilaha-illallah, the Islamic declaration of faith, woven into geometric patterns that merge traditional religious art with modern materials. Visitors immediately notice these sacred words embedded throughout the building's facade.
The building has multiple entrances, and visitors will find elevators available for easy access to all levels. The exterior screen pattern provides natural ventilation and light while protecting the interior from excessive heat during warm weather.
The geometric patterns of the exterior screen serve a dual purpose beyond aesthetics, acting as both a solar shade and rain shield. This clever design allows the building to regulate its temperature while protecting the interior from water damage.
