Palingbeek provincial park

Palingbeek Provincial Park is a domain near Ypres that combines forest and open landscape across roughly 230 hectares. Walking and cycling paths wind throughout the grounds, connecting different parts of the terrain.

The land began as an unfinished canal project from 1864 meant to connect the Leie river to the Ieperleekanaal. It became a provincial domain in 1970 and has remained publicly accessible since then.

The park contains multiple World War I remnants, including The Caterpillar crater, which serves as a memorial to the military operations in this region.

Marked trails here suit different fitness levels, with benches positioned throughout for rest stops. Parking areas and play equipment are found at several points across the grounds.

The land sits on a geographical watershed dividing the Yser and Scheldt river systems with noticeable elevation changes. These height variations create different habitats and views as you walk through it.
