Château de Montjardin, Medieval castle in Remouchamps, Belgium.
Château de Montjardin is a medieval castle near Remouchamps standing on a rocky platform about 60 feet (18 meters) above the Amblève River. It has thick stone walls and a square tower at its center.
The castle was built in 1327 under John the Blind, Count of Luxembourg, replacing an earlier fortress destroyed in 1286 by the Duke of Brabant. Its location along the Amblève was strategically important for controlling the river valley.
The castle displays architectural elements from multiple periods, including a limestone entrance stone bearing the arms of Sébastien Daems. Visitors can observe this mix of styles from across the river and notice how the building grew and changed over the centuries.
The property is privately owned and can only be viewed from the opposite bank of the Amblève River. The best vantage point is from the far side of the river where you can observe the structure without paying admission.
A circular corner turret collapsed in 1927 and was replaced with a square structure in Rhineland style featuring four foundations and three sides. This rebuild remains visible today and shows an unusual repair solution from the twentieth century.
