Earth Explorer, Science museum and theme park in Ostend, Belgium.
Earth Explorer is a science museum and theme park in Ostend featuring four thematic zones dedicated to the natural elements of earth, water, fire, and air. The space offers more than 50 interactive activities designed to help visitors understand the forces and processes shaping our planet.
The project was started by Belgian astronaut Dirk Frimout, who became the first Belgian in space during the STS-45 mission in 1992, and opened in May 2004. His vision was to bring earth science within reach of a wide public audience.
The name reflects the exploration of natural phenomena, and this place functions as a living learning center where visitors discover the forces shaping our world through hands-on engagement. Each zone represents a different element and invites people of all ages to play while understanding how nature works.
This location sits near Fort Napoleon, making it easy to find when exploring Ostend's attractions. You should plan for several hours to visit, as there are many activities to try throughout the space.
The air section contains a tornado simulator that recreates conditions of a real American tornado with wind speeds around 100 km/h (62 mph). Visitors can physically experience these natural forces and understand why such storms are so dangerous.
