Ouagadougou Airport, airport in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
Ouagadougou Airport is the main airport in the capital of Burkina Faso and handles both domestic and international flights with a functional, straightforward terminal layout. The building has a simple structure with an arrivals level below and a departures area above, complemented by cafes, shops, and basic services like currency exchange and a VIP lounge.
The airport opened in the 1960s and has served for decades as a vital link for Burkina Faso. In the early 2000s, the runway was extended to over 3000 meters to allow larger aircraft to land and the passenger terminal was expanded, especially during the FESPACO film festival.
The airport reflects daily life in Ouagadougou, where people from different regions meet. You see everyday moments: families greeting each other warmly, travelers exchanging greetings, and local vendors selling small items.
Taxis are available outside the terminal, and it is wise to agree on the fare before traveling, as fixed prices are not typical; the journey to the city center usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. For international travelers, arriving three hours before departure is recommended, while one to two hours suffices for domestic flights, and it helps to plan your transport to and from the airport in advance.
The airport is named after Thomas Sankara, an important leader of Burkina Faso, carrying the country's history in its name. Despite its central location and importance, a new and larger airport called Donsin is being built about 35 kilometers outside the city, marking a major shift for the country's air travel.
