Varshets, Spa town and municipality seat in Montana Province, Bulgaria
Varshets is a spa town in Montana Province situated on the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains. The area features thermal springs with temperatures between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius that emerge from the ground and are used for bathing and wellness treatments.
Archaeological finds such as a bronze statue of a Thracian boy from the 2nd century show that people settled here during Roman times. The town later developed into a known spa destination, with its thermal baths shaping the local economy to this day.
The Church of Saint George shapes the religious life and shows how Orthodox traditions remain visible in daily practice. The local museum displays objects from the past and tells the story of people who lived here.
The town offers several spa centers, hotels, and private accommodations for visitors with different budgets. Its mountain location means it gets cool, so bring warm clothing especially if visiting outside the bathing season, and most places are within walking distance.
The thermal springs produce about 15 liters of mineral water per second, making the town one of Bulgaria's richest thermal areas. These large amounts of hot water allowed the development of the extensive facilities you see today.
