Yantra, River in northern Bulgaria
The Yantra is a river flowing through northern Bulgaria that winds through the landscape for about 285 kilometers, creating many loops and narrow gorges. It eventually joins the Danube as a major right-bank tributary.
Veliko Tarnovo, located on its banks, served as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the 12th to the 14th century. The river helped shape the growth of this important historical center.
The Etar village along its banks displays traditional crafts and stone houses that show how people lived in this region long ago. Visitors can watch artisans at work using methods passed down through generations.
The river is most accessible in drier months when water levels are lower and the riverside paths are easier to navigate. Visitors exploring the area should wear sturdy shoes and bring water.
The river is home to numerous fish species, including several protected varieties found nowhere else in the region. This ecological importance makes it a sanctuary for rare freshwater species.
