Tran, city in Tran municipality, Pernik oblast, Bulgaria
Tran is a small city in western Bulgaria, set in the mountain valley of Znepole along the banks of the Erma River. The town is enclosed by hills and sits near Ruy Mountain and the Tran Gorge.
Tran once lay on a trade route linking the Adriatic coast to the interior, and the area was home to Thracians, Goths, and Slavs over many centuries. The town later came under Byzantine control and was destroyed in 1018.
People in Tran speak a local dialect that belongs to the Balkan dialect group and sounds noticeably different from the speech of neighboring regions. Visitors who stop to talk with locals can still hear these speech patterns in everyday conversation.
The town is small enough to walk around easily, but a car is useful for reaching the gorge and the trails around Ruy Mountain. Visiting outside the winter months is worth considering, as the area is known for sharp cold spells.
The lowest temperature ever recorded in Bulgaria was measured in Tran, a result of cold air pooling in the high mountain hollow where the town sits. On clear winter nights, the surrounding hills trap the cold and push temperatures far below what nearby regions experience.
