Storgosia, Roman fortress and archaeological site in Kaylaka Park, Pleven, Bulgaria.
Storgosia is a Roman fortress and archaeological site in Kaylaka Park near Pleven, consisting of multiple buildings and structures. The complex includes two gateways, three defensive towers, residential quarters, and a large religious building for worship.
The site started as a Roman supply station along a major trade route and later developed into a fortified settlement. This transformation occurred to defend inhabitants against invaders moving south from the frontier.
A Roman military garrison occupied this location, reflecting the empire's control over the Danube region and its frontier. Walking through the ruins, visitors can imagine the daily routines of soldiers who defended this strategic point.
Access to the site is via the main parking area of Kaylaka Park, from which visitors must walk to reach the ruins. The area can be explored during daylight hours, though the paths are uneven and sturdy footwear is advisable.
The surviving walls remain remarkably thick, comparable to modern construction standards, revealing the Romans' impressive building techniques. Archaeologists have recovered tools and household items that paint a vivid picture of daily life nearly 1,800 years ago.
