Panorama

Panorama is a military museum in Pleven situated on a distinctive structure supported by four enormous bayonet-shaped pillars, dedicated to the siege that surrounded this city during the Russo-Turkish conflict. Inside, visitors stand in the center of a circular chamber surrounded by monumental paintings depicting the third assault with soldiers, smoke, and chaos filling every detail.

The museum was created to commemorate a 1877 siege lasting four months where Russian and Romanian forces pressed against Ottoman defenses, making Pleven a crucial turning point in regional warfare. This event reshaped the political boundaries of southeastern Europe in the years that followed.

The building represents a place where both Russian and Bulgarian histories intertwine, reminding visitors of the shared struggle during wartime. People come here to reflect on sacrifice and heroism through the powerful artwork that fills the circular chamber.

The site sits on elevated ground with commanding views of the surrounding area, so wear comfortable shoes as there are stairs both inside and outside the building. Morning visits work best as natural light fills the circular chamber better and crowds tend to be smaller.

The massive bayonet pillars are planted at a symbolically loaded location, as beneath the structure lie remains of soldiers who fell during the siege from both sides. This buried memorial transforms the building into something more than a museum—it becomes a sacred ground.
