Koncheto, Mountain ridge in Pirin National Park, Bulgaria
Koncheto is a narrow ridge connecting the peaks Kutelo and Suhodol in Pirin National Park, with sections just a few feet wide at their narrowest. Steep cliffs drop sharply on both sides along the winding path.
The ridge was long known for its extreme danger and claimed several mountaineering incidents. A metal support rope was installed in 1963 to make passage safer for hikers.
The name Koncheto comes from Bulgarian and means 'little horse', referring to how hikers once straddled the narrow ridge like riding a horse. The way people move across it has transformed since safety ropes were installed.
The hike starts from Vihren hut, reachable by road from the town of Bansko, and this section alone takes a couple of hours. Good footwear and a head for heights are essential for moving safely along the ridge.
The ridge often displays contrasting weather on its two sides, with one side enjoying clear skies while the other remains shrouded in thick fog. This happens because of how wind flows around the narrow formation.
