Pantheon of National Revival Heroes, Mausoleum and museum in Ruse, Bulgaria.
The Pantheon of National Revival Heroes is a mausoleum and museum in Ruse, Bulgaria, that holds the remains of 39 Bulgarian figures beneath a golden dome topped with an eternal flame. Inside, it has exhibition rooms and a chapel dedicated to St Paisius of Hilendar.
The building was erected in 1978 on the site of a former All Saints church, which was demolished to make way for it. The demolition upset many local residents and is still considered a difficult chapter in the history of this site.
The memorial is dedicated to people who worked as teachers, writers, and revolutionaries during the Bulgarian National Revival of the 19th century. Inside, visitors can read the display panels and recognize names that remain part of Bulgarian collective memory today.
The pantheon is in central Ruse and easy to reach on foot from the main square. Allow some time to visit both the exhibition rooms and the chapel without rushing.
The interior walls carry the names of 453 participants in the April Uprising of 1876 and other movements, giving the building a documentary quality beyond its role as a burial site. For many of these individuals, these inscriptions are the only public record of their involvement.
