Children railway, Plovdiv, railway line in Bulgaria
The children railway in Plovdiv is a small electric-powered train with a locomotive and three cars that runs about 1 kilometer through the green landscape at Youth Hill. The route crosses a viaduct shaped like the number six, passes through a 50-meter tunnel, and offers a view over the city from the Panorama terminal station.
The railway was built in 1979 as part of celebrations for the International Year of the Child and used tracks and cars from a decommissioned railway line. After closure from 1997 to 2007, it was completely renovated and equipped with new battery technology for more reliable operation.
The children railway carries the name 'Peace Banner' and reflects its creation during the International Year of the Child. The route passes through the base of Youth Hill and connects different parts of the park, making it a place where families share small train journeys together.
The site has broad access for visitors with disabilities, including a ramp at Pioneer Station. The journey takes about 25 minutes and takes you from the starting station to the observation point, where you have time to enjoy the view before heading back.
The section after the tunnel curves into the shape of the number six and is a particularly memorable moment for children during the ride. This geometric curved section about 125 meters long creates a sense of surprise and delight with each passage.
