Ivaylovgrad Reservoir, reservoir in Bulgaria
The Ivaylovgrad Reservoir is a dam lake on the Arda River in the Haskovo region of southern Bulgaria, held back by a concrete dam. It sits in a valley surrounded by forested hills and forms part of the Arda Cascade, a chain of dams along the same river.
Work on the dam began in the late 1950s and was completed in 1964, primarily to generate electricity for the surrounding region. It was built during a period when Bulgaria invested heavily in hydroelectric infrastructure across its river valleys.
The reservoir takes its name from the nearby town of Ivaylovgrad and draws locals who come to fish and take boat rides on weekends. Along the banks, it is common to see anglers settled in for the day, giving the place a relaxed, everyday character.
A main road crosses the dam and gives a direct view over the water from both sides, making it easy to get a sense of the scale. Footpaths along the banks are simple to follow and are best visited in the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer.
Although the reservoir was built mainly to generate electricity, it has become one of the more productive fishing spots in southern Bulgaria, with pike and carp among the most common catches. The water here tends to stay clearer than in many other Bulgarian reservoirs, which many anglers say makes a real difference.
