Gerdzhika Bridge, Concrete bridge in Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Gerdzhika Bridge is a concrete structure spanning approximately 165 meters across the Maritsa River and connecting Ruski Boulevard with the Karshiyaka district. The roadway accommodates multiple lanes of traffic alongside pedestrian pathways on both sides.
Construction began in November 1930 and was completed in May 1931, with river flooding causing delays during the work. The cost of building was substantial, reflecting the engineering challenges faced during this period.
The bridge is named after engineer Parvan Gerdzhikov, who collaborated with Iliya Draganov and architect Ivan Naidenov on its design. It serves as a daily crossing point that links communities on opposite sides of the river.
The bridge is accessible throughout the day and serves as a main route between Central Station and Filipovo district. It is best to cross during off-peak hours when traffic is lighter and movement is easier.
A second bridge was built alongside the original in 2008 to handle growing traffic volume. This addition improved traffic flow by providing separate directional lanes for different routes.
