The Regional Archaeological Museum holds 100,000 exhibits showcasing artifacts from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages in dedicated exhibition halls.
Established in 1882 as an archaeological and numismatic office, the institution transformed into a complete archaeological museum during the 1920s.
The museum displays a collection of 300 icons and paintings by Bulgarian artists, including works from Stanislav Dospevski and Ivan Lazarov.
The numismatic department contains 60,000 coins from the sixth century BC to the twentieth century AD, with free admission on first Thursdays.
The collection includes gold vessels from the Panagyurishte Treasure discovered in 1949, demonstrating Thracian metalwork techniques from ancient times.
