Odessos, Ancient Greek colony ruins in Varna, Bulgaria
Odessos is an ancient Greek settlement in Varna with ruins of homes, temples, and streets from different periods. The excavations reveal remains of Roman bath complexes built with bricks and stone arches dating to the 2nd century.
The settlement was founded by Greek merchants from Miletus around 570 BC and grew into an important port. It remained influential under Roman rule until losing its independence in the mid-3rd century.
The site reflects how Greeks, Thracians, and Romans coexisted and shared their beliefs through shared spaces. You can see this in the remains of temples, homes, and marketplaces built side by side.
The ruins are visible at ground level and can be viewed from outside, with some areas fully excavated. Most valuable finds are displayed in the Varna Archaeological Museum, where you can see gravestones, statues, and early Christian artwork.
A tomb contained silver cups and medical instruments that reveal how doctors practiced their craft in ancient times. These objects offer rare glimpses into the daily work of healers in the ancient world.
