Museu da Casa Brasileira occupies the Solar Fábio Prado, a neoclassical mansion built between 1942 and 1945 for former São Paulo mayor Fábio da Silva Prado and his wife Renata Crespi Prado. Architect Wladimir Alves de Souza modeled the design on the Imperial Palace of Petrópolis. The museum displays furniture and objects representing Brazilian homes from the 17th century to the present.
The building was constructed in the 1940s as a private residence for a São Paulo mayor. It later passed to a cultural foundation and transformed into a museum dedicated to domestic life and design.
The house reflects how wealthy São Paulo families lived, visible through carefully arranged furniture and household items on display. The rooms convey a sense of domestic life among the city's elite across different periods.
The museum occupies the Solar Fábio Prado on Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima in Pinheiros, set back from the avenue behind a garden. The building has two floors, with the long-term exhibitions on the upper level and temporary shows on the ground floor. Free music performances take place on Sunday mornings from March to December.
The museum's digital archive, Arquivo Ernani Silva Bruno, holds 28,000 files of travelers' accounts, family inventories, and wills, organized into 24 themes such as food and furniture, revealing private life in Brazil since the 16th century.
