Bearskin Lake First Nation, First Nation reserve in Kenora District, Ontario, Canada

Bearskin Lake First Nation is an Oji-Cree settlement in Ontario comprising three connected communities linked by gravel roads in a remote location. The communities occupy land near Michikan Lake and include segments of the Severn River and Severn Lake.

The settlement relocated from its original location at Bearskin Lake to the current site near Michikan Lake during the 1930s. Official Band status was established in 1975, marking formal recognition as an organized First Nation.

The Oji-Cree community maintains traditional practices centered on fishing and seasonal gatherings that shape daily life at the reserve. These activities remain central to how people connect with the land and one another.

Reaching the area requires flying into Bearskin Lake Airport or traveling via winter roads that connect to surrounding regions during the colder months. The Band Office can provide guidance about visiting and help with administrative matters.

The community remains accessible only by air year-round and by winter ice roads during colder months, creating geographical isolation that has shaped its way of life for generations. This remote setting allows traditional practices to continue with minimal external interruptions.
