Manawan, First Nations reserve in Matawinie, Canada
Manawan is a First Nations reserve in Matawinie located on the south-western shores of Lac Métabeskéga in the Lanaudière region. The land spans roughly 774 hectares and is surrounded by forests and water.
The Canadian government established this reserve in 1906 following negotiations with Atikamekw leaders. This action formally recognized the territory as a protected space for the community.
The Atikamekw language is deeply rooted here and most residents use it in their daily lives. The community maintains this language through family, work, and local activities.
Two schools serve the community, one for elementary students and one for secondary students. It helps to connect with local contacts or tourism offices before visiting to learn more about the community and what is available.
The name comes from the Atikamekw language meaning 'place where they gather eggs,' reflecting historical activities and resources of the region. The original territory was known as Metapeckeka, a name meaning 'where swamps emerge.'
