Centre for Indigenous Theatre, Theatre education organization in Toronto, Ontario.
The Centre for Indigenous Theatre is a professional training and performance organization in Toronto serving Indigenous artists across multiple theatrical disciplines and creative fields. It offers a two-year program with an optional third year, led by experienced Indigenous artists and theatre professionals.
Founded in 1974 by James H. Buller under the name Native Theatre School, it became the first Indigenous-focused theatre education centre in Canada. The institution has since grown to establish its own recognition program.
The centre weaves traditional Indigenous storytelling into its programs, allowing students to express their own cultural narratives through theatre. Performances here reflect the perspectives and experiences of First Nations artists.
Classes are taught by established Indigenous artists who share their hands-on experience with students. It is helpful to check admission details ahead of time to understand program timing and expectations.
The centre has managed the James Buller Awards since 1995, honouring outstanding achievements by Indigenous performing artists. This recognition programme has become an important part of Canada's artistic landscape.
