Eramosa Karst, Protected geological area in Stoney Creek, Canada
Eramosa Karst is a protected karst area in Ontario featuring underground caves, streams, meadows, and forests. The site spans about 78 hectares and shows how water slowly dissolves limestone to create hollow spaces beneath the ground.
The karst landscape formed roughly 13,000 years ago when the last glacier left the region and water began carving pathways through limestone. This water-and-stone system developed into the complex underground network visible today.
The name comes from the Eramosa River, which flows through the underground systems beneath the site. Visitors can observe how water shapes the landscape and how plants and animals live in these unusual geological conditions.
The area is open daily from sunrise to sunset with parking available nearby. Wear sturdy shoes since trails can be uneven and you may encounter rough ground and muddy sections.
The site contains sixteen different karst formations, with Nexus Cave being one of the longest in the province due to its extensive passages. This cave demonstrates how massive and intricate the underground structures can become.
