Auchmar, Gothic Revival estate in Hamilton, Canada

Auchmar is a two-story brick manor on Fennell Avenue West with stuccoed walls, vaulted corridors, and decorative plaster ceilings throughout. The house sits on spacious grounds and retains many original interior features from its construction period.

The manor was built in 1855 by Isaac Buchanan, a merchant who later became active in Canadian politics. During World War II, the property served as a recovery facility for members of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

The estate served as a gathering place for community celebrations and social events that reflected the owner's values. Visitors can still see the rooms where these gatherings took place.

Regular public events and guided tours are offered to visitors interested in exploring the architectural details and rooms. It is best to check ahead for tour schedules, as access may be limited to specific times.

The building displays Gothic Revival features that are uncommon in Canada's early residences. This architectural style sets it apart from other regional homes built in the same period.
