Hindu Temple of Ottawa-Carleton

The Hindu Temple of Ottawa-Carleton contains nine different shrines dedicated to deities including Ganesha, Krishna, Shiva, Lakshmi, Rama, Durga, Hanuman, and Nataraja.

The temple opened in 1989 after transforming from a cornfield purchased in 1984 into a $4 million structure funded through donations from Canadian Hindu community members.

The building functions as both a religious center and community space, providing resources such as halls and libraries while serving approximately 6,000 Hindus in Ottawa.

The temple structure incorporates specific architectural modifications to handle Canadian weather conditions, particularly addressing the needs of winter snow accumulation on the building.

Pandit Madhu Sahasrabudhe, who served as priest from 1960 until 2004, represented the Hindu community at numerous events, including a multi-faith thanksgiving attended by the Queen.
