James Cooper House, Heritage house in Toronto, Canada.
James Cooper House is a Second Empire style residence at Sherbourne Street and Linden with eight bedrooms and classical architectural details throughout. The building features decorative plaster moldings and now functions as an amenities center within a 32-story condominium complex.
The house was built in 1881 for James Cooper, a footwear manufacturer and retailer. Later it housed the Keeley Institute for Nervous Diseases and the Toronto Knights of Columbus.
The residence reflects Victorian residential architecture and marks how Toronto neighborhoods evolved as large private homes gave way to modern apartment complexes. Its style and craftsmanship demonstrate the tastes and prosperity of the upper class during that era.
The building is protected under the Ontario Heritage Act and maintains its heritage status despite being part of a larger development. Visitors should note it functions as an amenities center and may not be accessible at all times.
In 2008, the 800-ton structure was moved 20 feet (6 meters) east and 5 feet (1.5 meters) south in an unprecedented operation. This relocation was one of the largest of its kind for a residential building in Canada.
