Ornamental Gardens, Ottawa

The Ornamental Gardens are a structured garden area covering 8 acres with roses, peonies, irises, and perennial plants arranged in clearly defined sections. The collection also includes a notable hedge collection featuring 65 different plant species.

The grounds were established in the 1880s and served as a research facility for developing cold-resistant plant varieties suited to Canadian climates. The hedge collection later expanded, with older sections dating from 1891 and newer additions from 1965.

The gardens display many plants bred in Canada, including the Explorer rose series and Preston lilacs, which represent national horticultural achievements. Visitors can see varieties that were specifically developed to thrive in cold climates.

The grounds are free to access from dawn until dusk, with parking available near the site. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since exploring the different garden areas involves walking.

The hedge collection is divided into two sections, with older plantings over a century old and showing how the gardens expanded over time. This long-term development illustrates the evolution of gardening techniques and plant selection.
