Weenusk First Nation, First Nation community in northern Ontario, Canada
Weenusk First Nation is an indigenous community and First Nation band in northern Ontario, Canada, situated along Hudson Bay. The main settlement of Peawanuck serves as the community's central hub, surrounded by boreal and wetland terrain.
The community originally lived further north until a severe flood in 1986 forced a relocation. The present-day settlement of Peawanuck was founded about 30 kilometers to the southwest as a result.
The community is rooted in Swampy Cree traditions, and languages such as Cree and Oji-Cree are spoken in everyday life. Visitors can hear these languages used naturally in conversations around the settlement.
Peawanuck is in a remote area and typically reached by small aircraft, so planning ahead is essential. Those wishing to visit the community should check in advance about access, as the territory belongs to an indigenous community.
The name Weenusk comes from Cree and means groundhog, while Peawanuck refers to a place where flint is found. Both names point to real features of the land that the community has relied on for generations.
