Gunilda, Luxury steam yacht wreck in Lake Superior, Canada.
The Gunilda is a steel luxury yacht resting on the bottom of Lake Superior at a depth of around 270 feet. The vessel has kept its original structure intact and still displays gilded accents and period wooden furnishings throughout its interior spaces.
Built in 1897 by Ramage & Ferguson in Scotland, the yacht went down in 1911 after striking McGarvey Shoal near Rossport, Ontario. The accident ended the story of one of the era's most elegant vessels on the lake floor.
The vessel reflects how the wealthy traveled and spent time during the late Victorian era, showcasing the craftsmanship and luxury standards of that period. Walking through its spaces reveals the expectations and tastes of its original owners.
Only experienced divers with advanced certifications and special gas equipment can visit this site due to its great depth. Diving trips are organized from Rossport and require careful planning and technical skill.
The wreck contains remarkably preserved items such as a piano, brass lanterns, and original furniture, kept intact by the cold freshwater of the lake. These personal objects offer a rare glimpse into life aboard a wealthy household's private vessel.
