Lion of Belfort, Bronze monument in Dorchester Square, Montreal, Canada.
The Lion of Belfort features a reclining lion made of granite, positioned on a pedestal designed by architect Robert Findlay at the eastern side of Des Metcalfe.
The monument was unveiled in 1897 during Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations as a gift from the Sun Life Assurance Company to Montreal.
The sculpture represents the connection between Canada and Britain, with the lion facing east toward France and the United Kingdom.
The granite pedestal includes a drinking fountain that was reconstructed in 2009 following the original specifications from the nineteenth century.
The Montreal lion is a scaled reproduction measuring approximately one-tenth the size of Auguste Bartholdi's original creation in Belfort, France.
