Life, Concrete sculpture at Ben's Bakery, Quinpool Road, Halifax, Canada
Life is a ferroconcrete and acrylic glass sculpture on Quinpool Road in Halifax that stretches about 65 feet and rises roughly 12 feet tall. The structure includes three glass boxes integrated into its form and serves as a barrier between the street and a parking area.
Joseph Drapell created this sculpture in 1968, just two years after arriving in Halifax as a refugee from Czechoslovakia. The work came into being during a period when many European artists were rebuilding their lives in Canada.
The sculpture shows male and female figures, with the glass boxes representing how people think and feel, while the concrete walls hold plastic rods that suggest exploration and curiosity.
The sculpture sits right alongside the street and is easy to spot from Quinpool Road. The best views come from the sidewalk or while passing by, since the structure serves as a divider for a parking area.
The sculpture was originally painted bright pink, and its acrylic glass parts cast colored light patterns on the surrounding sidewalk throughout the day. This glowing quality meant the piece changed its appearance depending on the time of day and the weather.
