Naval Museum of Halifax

The Naval Museum of Halifax displays Canadian maritime artifacts within a historic residential building overlooking the harbor. The collection spreads across three levels and features uniforms, medals, photographs, and documents spanning different eras of naval service.

The building dates from 1814 to 1818 and housed numerous senior commanders of the North American Station. Nearby, a burial ground marks sailors who died during the War of 1812, including casualties from a notable naval battle.

The building itself was home to senior naval commanders, making it more than just a display space for objects. Walking through these rooms, you sense the weight of decisions made by those who led Canada's maritime forces.

The museum operates on weekdays only and closes on weekends and holidays, so plan your visit accordingly. Entry is by donation, giving you flexibility to contribute what feels right for your experience.

The collection holds the original bell from HMCS Niobe, the first flagship of the Royal Canadian Navy, alongside numerous other ship bells and maritime objects. These bells each carry the stories of vessels and their crews across generations.
