Badus, Mountain summit in Grisons and Uri, Switzerland
Badus is a mountain summit in the Lepontine Alps standing at about 2,928 meters (9,606 feet), marking the border between Uri and Graubünden. The peak features steep slopes and exposed rock formations throughout its terrain.
The mountain has served as a natural boundary between Uri and Graubünden since the establishment of Swiss territorial divisions in 1803. Its long role as a border peak has shaped its importance to both cantons.
Local communities use two different names for the peak - it is called Six Madun in German while Romansh speakers refer to it as Piz Badus. This naming tradition reflects the linguistic diversity that characterizes this border region.
The best time to reach the summit is during summer months from June to September, when experienced hikers can follow marked trails starting from Oberalp Pass. The route requires hiking experience and good fitness due to the steep terrain.
From the summit, visitors can look directly down at Lake Toma, the source of the Rhine River, which flows from the mountain's northern base. This location offers a rare chance to see where one of Europe's major rivers begins.
