Bifertenstock, Mountain peak in Glarus Alps, Switzerland.
Bifertenstock is a summit in the Glarus Alps that rises to 3,419 meters with steep rock faces on its northern side. Multiple climbing routes traverse these exposed sections, offering different levels of difficulty for experienced mountaineers.
The mountain became significant in 1906 when mountaineers established the Akademikerroute through the North Face, creating what would become a reference point for Glarner climbing traditions. This route shaped how subsequent generations approached the peak.
The summit carries two names: Bifertenstock in German and Piz Durschin in Romansh, reflecting how different communities have shaped this place over time. Visitors from both language regions recognize the mountain by these distinct names.
The approach starts at the Bifertenhütte at 2,482 meters, accessible via a marked trail from the parking area at Alp Quader. The route demands proper equipment and experience with rock and ice terrain.
In June 2022, an amateur radio operator activated the summit for the first time for radio communications, establishing 43 contacts. This demonstrates how the remote peak continues to attract new types of visitors.
