Grünhornhütte

The Grünhornhütte is a mountain shelter in the Glarus Alps at approximately 2450 meters elevation in Switzerland. From this location, visitors look out toward surrounding peaks and valleys in a high alpine landscape.

The shelter was founded in 1863 and was the first mountain refuge built by the Swiss Alpine Club in Switzerland. It thus marks the beginning of organized Alpine access in the country.

The hut displays traditional construction methods from the Swiss Alps and has been recognized as a regional cultural property. Visitors can still observe the crafted details and simple layout that characterize early mountain shelters.

The building is no longer an active lodging facility but offers visitors insight into the structure and history of an early Alpine shelter. Access is via hiking trails that require physical endurance and mountain walking experience.

The shelter ceased operations as a lodging facility in 2011 and now functions as a teaching museum about early Alpine access. Its location lies within a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, showing how early tourists shaped these valuable areas.
