The canton of Schwyz extends from Lake Zurich to Lake Lucerne, with the Mythen mountains rising prominently above its capital city Schwyz.

The Federal Charter of 1291, marking the birth of Switzerland, originated in Schwyz when three forest cantons united against Habsburg rule.
