Rougemont is a municipality in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, located in the Riviera-Pays-d'Enhaut district near the edge of the Alps. The village is listed as a Swiss townscape worthy of protection and consists of old timber and stone houses with sloped roofs arranged along narrow streets.
Rougemont was founded in the 11th century when monks established a small monastery and built a Romanesque church that still stands at the heart of the village. Over the following centuries, the settlement grew from a monastic community into an independent farming village.
The name Rougemont means 'red mountain' in old French, referring to the reddish clay rocks that stand out above the village and are still visible today. Each year during Pentecost, the village hosts La Folia, an outdoor music festival that draws people from the surrounding area.
The village is easy to reach by train or car, and the train line passes through mountain scenery on the way in. Once there, walking is the best way to get around, as the streets are narrow and the main points of interest are close to each other.
Rougemont joined the 'Most Beautiful Villages of Switzerland' group in 2017, which helps keep its buildings and streets looking as they have for generations. Many of the old wooden facades still carry carved inscriptions showing family names or dates, making the houses themselves a kind of open record of who lived there.
