Therme Vals, Indoor thermal complex in Vals, Switzerland
Therme Vals is a thermal bath complex in the Swiss Alps built from local quartzite slabs and concrete, housing multiple pools within a cave-like geometric structure carved into the mountainside. The facility contains indoor and outdoor pools at varying temperatures, massage rooms, and treatment spaces integrated throughout the structure.
The facility opened in 1996 following the bankruptcy of a 1960s hotel building, which the municipality acquired and transformed into a thermal complex. This conversion revived the site after decades of abandonment into one of the region's notable destinations.
The facility takes its name from the village and was intentionally designed without clocks or digital displays, inviting visitors to forget time and focus entirely on the warm water and natural surroundings. This choice shapes how people experience the space, encouraging them to move at their own pace.
The pools range from cool to warm water temperatures, with areas both inside and outside the mountain structure to explore. Visitors should bring appropriate swimming gear and be prepared to walk between different pool areas.
The building features a grass-covered roof that blends seamlessly into the mountainside, making it nearly invisible from above. Subtle openings in the roof allow natural light to filter through, resembling natural cracks in stone.
