Schwarzsee, Alpine lake in Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland
Schwarzsee is an alpine lake in Canton of Fribourg situated at about 1046 meters elevation with dark waters and sloped shorelines. The water is relatively shallow, reaching depths of up to 10 meters, and is surrounded by the Pre-Alps mountains on all sides.
The lake formed during the Ice Age from glacial erosion and has remained largely unchanged since then. As the region became settled, hiking paths were created that brought visitors to the mountains and made the lake a popular destination.
Local communities gather here for swimming and picnicking during warmer months, making it an important spot for recreation in the region. The lake serves as a natural meeting place where people connect with the landscape and each other.
The lake is easily reached on foot via hiking trails that start from several parking areas in the surrounding region. The best time to visit is from May through October, when the weather is stable and the paths are snow-free.
The shape of the lake resembles a natural amphitheater, framed by four mountain peaks that surround it completely. This arrangement creates a notable acoustic effect on clear days, where sounds from the water echo off the surrounding rock walls.
