Märe, Mountain summit in Bern, Switzerland
Märe is a mountain summit in the Bernese Alps that rises along the border between the cantons of Fribourg and Bern. The massif displays different slopes and vegetation zones on each side, changing according to aspect and elevation.
The mountain served early on as a natural boundary line between territories and was formally established as a cantonal border when modern Swiss borders were drawn. This boundary function has remained unchanged to this day.
The name Märe comes from Swiss German and refers to the mountain's role as a boundary. Along the slopes you can see alpine meadows and pastures that local farmers have used for many generations.
Marked hiking trails lead up from Schwarzsee or Oberwil im Simmental, with clear signage showing difficulty levels and estimated times. It is wise to start early in the day and be prepared for changing weather conditions at elevation.
The rocks on the Bernese side differ noticeably from those on the Fribourg side, making the mountain a natural classroom for geology. Hikers notice the different layers and colors during the ascent, revealing this geological diversity.
