Lauchernalp, Ski resort in Lötschental Valley, Switzerland
Lauchernalp is a ski resort in the Lötschental valley in the Swiss canton of Valais, rising from a base station at around 1,500 m to a high point near 3,100 m. The slopes run across open hillsides and through narrow valley sections, covering a range of difficulty levels.
The area was opened to winter sports in the second half of the 20th century with the construction of its first gondola line. Over the following decades, additional lifts and runs were built, gradually turning it into one of the larger ski areas in Valais.
The place draws both visitors and locals who share the slopes and mountain spaces throughout the winter months. Traditional alpine ways blend naturally with contemporary skiing and mountain activities.
Access by car goes as far as the valley floor, since Lauchernalp itself is car-free and can only be reached by gondola from Wiler. Visiting on weekdays or outside school holiday periods generally means shorter waits at the lifts.
The Hockenhorngrat viewpoint sits within the UNESCO World Heritage area of Jungfrau-Aletsch, making this one of the few ski resorts in the world that overlaps with such a protected zone. On a clear day, a large number of Swiss Alpine peaks above 4,000 m are visible from that point.
