Vermigelhütte, Mountain hut in Uri, Switzerland
The Vermigelhütte sits at 2042 meters (6700 feet) in the Unteralptal valley and provides views across the mountain ranges surrounding Andermatt. The building serves as a base for hikers and mountaineers exploring the high-altitude trails in the region.
The shelter was founded in 1974 and became an important stopping point for climbers exploring central Switzerland. Its creation coincided with the Swiss Alpine Club's expansion of its mountain hut network.
The hut is run by Swiss Alpine Club volunteers who cook regional mountain dishes for guests during the season. It reflects the tradition of self-sufficiency that defines mountain hospitality in the Swiss Alps.
Multiple hiking routes lead to the hut from Andermatt, Oberalppass, and Gotthardpass, with both foot traffic and mountain bikes possible in suitable conditions. Plan your arrival carefully, as the shelter closes entirely in autumn and reopens only from December 27th onward.
The shelter offers no emergency winter refuge and remains completely closed from autumn through December 27th, requiring careful trip planning. This extended closure period means winter visitors must coordinate arrival and departure with the limited opening dates.
