Turicum, Archaeological site in Lindenhof hill, Zürich, Switzerland
Turicum was a Roman settlement that spread across both sides of the Limmat River and is now visible beneath Lindenhof. The surviving wall foundations, bath facilities, and defensive structures reveal the layout of this ancient trading post.
The settlement began around 15 BCE as a Roman customs post controlling trade routes in the region. It grew and was fortified as Roman control expanded during ancient times.
The Roman bath remains show how daily life unfolded here, with people gathering to wash and socialize as part of their routine. You can see from the foundations how central these spaces were to community life.
You can visit the remains beneath Lindenhof square, where preserved wall sections, a replica gravestone, and bath foundations are on display. The location is easy to reach and allows you to walk while exploring the history.
A gravestone from the 2nd century found here carries the oldest known written form of the name Turicum. This piece is a rare record of how the Romans themselves referred to this place.
