Kastell Zürich, Roman fortress in Lindenhof district, Zürich, Switzerland
Kastell Zürich is a Roman fortress buried beneath the current Lindenhof park in central Zurich, sitting directly on the Limmat riverbank. Underground lie irregularly laid foundations and partially excavated stone walls that mark the former fortification.
The fortress was built between the 3rd and 4th centuries to defend Roman territory against Germanic peoples. After Alemannic invasion in the 5th century, the site retained military importance and later served as a ruler's residence.
The site shows how a Roman military installation was later converted into a medieval seat of power, shaping Zurich's development for centuries. The remains tell the story of different peoples who settled here and adapted the place to their needs.
The archaeological remains are located beneath Lindenhof park, with some stone sections and information plaques accessible to visitors. Taking time to explore the area carefully helps you spot the partially hidden remains and understand what you are looking at.
The fortress was not only a military installation but also a home for administrators and their families during Roman times. This civilian use alongside defensive purposes made it a true administrative center that shaped the origins of modern Zurich.
