Lindenhof view point

Lindenhof is an elevated viewpoint in the Old Town offering sweeping views across Zurich. From here you see the Grossmünster's towers, City Hall, the Limmat River, and further out the university and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

The location began as a Roman fort in the 4th century and later became a palace in the 9th century under Charlemagne's descendant. This medieval phase established the hilltop as an important seat of power in the region.

The hilltop serves as a gathering place where chess players regularly meet at permanent outdoor tables to play matches. This tradition shapes the social life of the spot and draws people from across the city.

The spot is easy to reach on foot from the train station and features wide, accessible paths with several benches for sitting. The ground is open and walkable, though gently sloped.

In 1798, citizens gathered here to swear the oath that sealed the Swiss Constitution, marking a turning point in Swiss democracy. This symbolic moment is often overlooked by visitors despite its importance to the nation's story.
